DIN EN ISO 50001 - Energy management system

DIN EN ISO 50001 - Energy management system

The internationally valid DIN EN ISO 50001 was published at the end of 2011. It finally replaced DIN EN 16001 in late April 2012.
As one of the first certification companies, TÜV Hessen and its familiar TÜV PROFiCERT brand offer you certification of your energy management system (EnMS) in accordance with DIN EN ISO 50001.

What is the objective of an energy management system?

When an energy management system is introduced in a company, all energy-relevant processes and procedures are analyzed and optimized. In other words, a system is introduced to make the energy flows more transparent. Based on this system, it then becomes
possible to determine energy saving potential specifically for the long run/continuously and to increase it where possible or economically reasonable.

What are the advantages of an energy management system?

The advantages of introducing and subsequently certifying an EnMS include the following:

  • Discovery of cost saving potential
  • Possible tax relief for small and medium-sized enterprises (depending on national laws)
  • Improved image
  • Increased transparency of energy-relevant processes
  • Increased employee motivation
  • Additional customer acquisition tool

What are the requirements of the energy management standard DIN EN ISO 50001?

The basic structure of DIN EN ISO 50001 is similar to that of the environmental management system standard DIN EN ISO 14001. It requires the company to make statements or specifications regarding topics such as:

  • Energy policy
  • Determination and monitoring of energy-related aspects
  • Statutory requirements
  • Energy objectives and energy programs
  • Definition of the organizational structure and responsibilities
  • Training
  • Internal auditing of the energy management system
  • Evaluation of the energy management system by top management

Can synergy effects be utilized where an environmental management system is already in place?

Definitely, because the basic structure of DIN EN ISO 50001 is comparable to that of DIN EN ISO 14001. Integration is therefore possible without great expense.
