Energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of transport services

Energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of transport services

TÜV PROFiCERT-plus certification DIN EN 16258

The TÜV PROFiCERT-plus "energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of transport services" process reviews the methodology for the calculation of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions based on DIN EN 16258*. The objective of the DIN EN 16258 European standard is to support companies in collecting data on the energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of their transports according to a uniform European standard. They get a better overview of the impact of their activities on the
environment and can thus identify potential for reductions more easily.

Who is the certification aimed at?

The certification is aimed at logistics companies and organizations, such as transport service operators, transport service organizers and clients.

What does DIN EN 16258 require?

DIN EN 16258 specifies requirements for the calculation and declaration of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions for all transports, regardless of whether the transports are carried out by the company itself or by subcontractors. The "tank to wheel" and "well to wheel" energy consumption and emissions need to be determined. Along with the emissions from the combustion, "well to wheel" also includes greenhouse gas emissions that occur as a result of the production of fuels or electricity.
The standard imposes additional requirements concerning the selection of system boundaries, allocation methods and emission factors. The calculations do not include, for example, warehouses, offices and other handling facilities, stationary refrigeration, manufacture and maintenance of vehicles and transport infrastructure, and refrigerant losses.

Objectives and advantages of the certification

There is a growing demand for reliable information on greenhouse gas emissions caused by the transport sector. The TÜV PROFICERT-plus certification guarantees companies in the transport and logistics industry that the CO2 footprint of their transport services and the declaration of the results have been compiled in compliance with the requirements of the DIN EN 16258 standard. In addition, the companies can also certify the carbon neutrality of their services.
